What Can I Eat During Invisalign Treatment?

Smiling Woman Holding Invisalign Aligner

Invisalign straightens teeth without the hassle of traditional metal braces.

But does Invisalign come with any dietary restrictions?

At A New Smile Dental Center in Miami, we want to make your Invisalign journey as smooth as possible, so let’s go over the dos and don’ts of eating with Invisalign.

Remove Invisalign When Eating

One of the main benefits of Invisalign is that you can remove your aligners while eating. This allows you to enjoy all your favorite foods without the limitations that come with traditional braces.

However, wearing your aligners while eating or drinking anything other than water can cause problems. Food and beverages can stain or damage the aligners, compromise their effectiveness, and lead to other dental issues. To get the best results from your Invisalign treatment, always remove them during meals.

Foods to Consume with Caution

No food is off-limits with clear aligners, however, you must be a bit careful when eating:

1. Sticky and Chewy Foods

Sticky foods like gum, caramel, and taffy can cling to your aligners and teeth. These types of foods can cause damage by pulling at your aligners or getting stuck in them, so always clean carefully before re-inserting your aligners.

2. Hard and Crunchy Foods

Foods like popcorn, nuts, and hard candies can also get stuck in teeth or between teeth.

3. Sugary Foods and Drinks

Sugary foods and drinks can be harmful to your teeth, especially when they get trapped under your aligners. Sugar can cause bacteria to build up, leading to tooth decay and cavities. Brush and rinse before putting them back in.

4. Highly Pigmented Foods and Drinks

Foods and drinks that are heavily pigmented, like coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and tomato sauce, can stain your aligners if you do not clean them off before putting the aligners back in.

Best Practices for Eating with Invisalign

To keep your aligners in great shape and your treatment on track, follow the best practices. Always take out your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water to prevent staining, damage, and the risk of food getting trapped under the aligners.

Before putting your aligners back in, brush and floss your teeth to remove any food particles. Additionally, whenever you remove your aligners, rinse them with water to keep them clean. You can also use a soft toothbrush to gently brush them.

Up to date facility. I felt very comfortable. I’ve had bad experiences in dental offices in the past. Recently I was recommended A new Smile Dental. THIS office is THE example of what all DENTAL offices should feel like. They are now my new dental office and I couldn’t be happier.
