A tooth extraction can feel like a daunting procedure, but sometimes it’s the best choice for your oral health. Additionally, with the right aftercare, healing can be straightforward and stress-free.
At A New Smile Dental Center, we ensure every patient understands the steps to take for a comfortable recovery. Follow these tips to get back to your routine quickly.
Bite Down on Gauze to Stop Bleeding
After the extraction, your dentist will place a gauze pad over the site. Bite down gently for 30–45 minutes to help form a blood clot. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze with a fresh one. Avoid excessive talking or chewing during this time.
Rest is Key
Take it easy for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Avoid strenuous activities, as increased blood flow could dislodge the clot or worsen bleeding. We’ll provide you with a list of activities to avoid on the first day.
Address Swelling with Ice Packs
Swelling is a typical response to an extraction. A simple ice pack can help you manage the swelling and discomfort. Hold the ice pack on your cheek for up to 15 minutes at a time several times throughout the first day.
Be Cautious with Food and Drink
Stick to soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, and pudding for the first 24 hours. Avoid hot or acidic foods that could irritate the site. Drink plenty of water, but skip the straws—sucking can disturb the healing process.
Keep the Area Clean
While brushing is important, avoid the extraction site for the first day. On the second day, rinse gently with a warm saltwater solution to reduce bacteria and soothe the area. Avoid vigorous rinsing to protect the clot.

Take Medications as Directed
If your dentist prescribes painkillers or antibiotics, follow the instructions carefully. Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen can also help with discomfort.
Recognize Warning Signs
Healing typically progresses well, but watch for unusual symptoms like severe pain, excessive bleeding, or fever. If you suspect something isn’t right, contact our office immediately.
