Are Dentures or Implants Better for Daily Eating?

Elder Man Smiling With Arms Crossed

Living in Miami means enjoying incredible food with family and friends, from fresh seafood and Cuban sandwiches to tropical fruits and grilled steak. But when you are living with missing teeth, sitting down to a meal can feel more stressful than satisfying.

When deciding between traditional dentures and modern dental implants, many patients ask us how each option feels during dinner. Let’s break down how each choice affects your chewing strength and taste perception to help you pick the right path for your lifestyle.

The Palate Plate vs. An Open Roof

Traditional full upper dentures rely on a wide, pink acrylic plate that covers the entire roof of your mouth to create suction. While the plate keeps the teeth in place, it also covers the delicate temperature and taste sensors on the palate. Therefore, eating with full dentures can make food taste slightly muted and block you from feeling the temperature of your meals. Dental implants replace individual tooth roots directly inside your jawbone, meaning your new teeth do not need a roof plate. Your palate stays completely open, keeping your full sense of taste intact.

Chewing Force Differences

Because traditional dentures sit directly on top of soft, sensitive gum tissue, they can only restore a fraction of your original biting strength, roughly 20% to 30%. Harder foods like crisp apples, thick steaks, or crunchy nuts can easily displace the denture. Dental implants fuse into your natural jawbone over time. The solid foundation restores up to 90% of your original bite force, letting you chew tough or crunchy foods with ease.

Food Traps and Daily Convenience

If you have ever worn a traditional denture, you know the frustration of small seeds or food bits getting trapped underneath the plastic plate during a meal. Additionally, using sticky creams or gels to keep your teeth secure throughout a long dinner can be messy. Implants hold fixed crowns or bridges permanently in place, allowing you to eat, brush, and floss naturally.

Up to date facility. I felt very comfortable. I’ve had bad experiences in dental offices in the past. Recently I was recommended A new Smile Dental. THIS office is THE example of what all DENTAL offices should feel like. They are now my new dental office and I couldn’t be happier.
